The Presidential Commissioner for Foreign Relations, Julio Borges, announced that the Legitimate Government of Venezuela through his office, issued a response to the Russian Foreign Ministry on the case of Nicolás Maduro’s front man, Alex Saab.

Commissioner Borges explained that Saab cannot be considered a diplomatic representative, and therefore, does not enjoy the privileges and immunities granted by international law.
“Saab was the architect of a network of corruption and crime that looted billions of dollars from the country, and that is why he must answer to justice,” said the highest diplomatic representative of Venezuela.

Bogotá, August 13th, 2021
In response to the recent communication from the Russian Foreign Ministry on the diplomatic character of (Colombian) citizen Alex Saab, we would like to point out the following in this regard: Nicolás Maduro’s regime has tried to prevent the extradition of Mr. Saab to the United States, where he is wanted for the crime of money laundering, under the false pretense of alleged diplomatic immunity.
The immunity alleged by the regime would derive from an alleged official position granted by the Venezuelan government as a “diplomatic agent.” On this matter, the first thing we must say is that the granting of a diplomatic passport does not mean that the person is a diplomatic agent and that consequently he enjoys the privileges and immunities granted by International Law. Even less so if that “passport”, as it actually happened, has been issued after his arrest, as if such an act could have retroactive effects.
